MANCHESTER ? Bessie Mildred Dyer, 83, of Elliot Avenue, died Monday, July 14, 2003, following several months of poor health. Her passing was peaceful and at her favorite place in the world, her beloved summer residence on Messalonskee Lake in Belgrade. She was born in Belgrade on Oct. 26, 1919, the daughter of Percy and Mildred Page Yeaton. She graduated from Belgrade High School in 1938 and attended Gates Business School of Augusta. On Dec. 27, 1941, she married John R. Dyer of Augusta and traveled with him to California where he was stationed with the Navy during World War II. After the war, the couple returned to Augusta, residing on Riverside Drive before moving to Manchester in 1970. Bessie worked for more than 25 years for the U.S. Treasury Department as supervisor of clerks in the Augusta office of the Internal Revenue Service. For several years, she and her husband owned and operated summer rental cottages on Messalonskee Lake, an enterprise she continued to manage after his death in 1986. Over the years, she was active and held offices in numerous community and charitable organizations that included: Queen Esther Chapter, Order of Eastern Star; Manchester and Kennebec Pomona 4 Granges; East Winthrop Thursday Club, formerly Maine Federation Women's Club District 10; MaineGeneral Medical Center Auxiliary; and National Association of Federal Employees. She enjoyed shopping, traveling, cooking, entertaining, gardening, spending summers at her camp and evening perch fishing on Messalonskee Lake. Bessie was predeceased by her infant brother, Lee Yeaton; and her husband. She is survived by her brother, Donald Yeaton and his wife, Audrey, of Winthrop; nephews Calvin Yeaton and his wife, Linda, of Winthrop and Howard Yeaton and his wife, Christa Lance, of Gansevoort, N.Y.; nieces Judith Yeaton of Wayne and Sylvia Kjellson and her husband, Carl, of Bakersfield, Calif.; three great-nieces, four great-nephews and one great-great-niece; and several cousins. Relatives and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. John Dunn officiating. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Belgrade.
