Obituary

HALLOWELL - Charles 'Hap' Buck, 69, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at his home in Hallowell with his family by his side. He was born in Portland on April 23, 1939, the son of Charles Barstow and Margaret (Grover) Buck. Hap was a 1958 graduate of Sanford High School. He was employed as a professional truck driver for most of his working life and, for the past five years, had enjoyed being a bus driver for School Administrative District 16. Hap was a member of Augusta Elks Lodge 964 and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Hallowell. Lovingly known as 'Bumpa' to his grandchildren, he loved following them in their activities and being at as many of their sporting events as he was able to attend. Hap was predeceased by his father; his brother, Archer Buck; and a granddaughter, Vanessa Buck. He is survived by his mother, Margaret Buck, of West Newfield; his wife, Alice, of Hallowell; his two daughters, Patricia Welton and her husband, Steve, of Pittston and Karen Buck and her partner, Jeff Galouch, of Hallowell; two sons, Craig Buck and his wife, Tammy, of Dallas, and Christopher Buck and his wife, Monica, of Hallowell; his sisters, Nan Stanbach, Eunice Sargent, Theresa Dube and Beverly Buck, and their families; grandchildren Victoria Welton, of Pittston, Joshua Buck and his wife, Deanna, and Kelsey Mills and her husband, Travis, all of Fayetteville, N.C., Kaitlin Buck, of Dallas, Valerie Jensen and her husband, Allen, of Hallowell, Alyssa, Teresa and Kerri Withee, all of Farmingdale, Matthew Zeh, of Mount Vernon, and Kristina and Spencer Buck, of Farmingdale; stepgrandson Erik Botterbusch, of Hallowell; and two great-great-granddaughters, Leslie Jensen, of Hallowell, and Reagan Buck, of North Carolina. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A celebration of Hap's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Hap and Alice's home at 99 Winthrop St., Hallowell, with the Rev. Calvin Sanborn officiating. Burial will follow in Hallowell Cemetery, after which all are invited to attend a reception back at Hap and Alice's home. There will be a shuttle bus available for those who would like to park at the Kennebec Ice Arena and be shuttled to the Buck's home at 99 Winthrop St. Also, upon conclusion of the service, folks are welcome to stay at the Bucks' home to start in the reception until the family and those choosing to go to the cemetery return.
