AUGUSTA - Chester Calvin Gilley, 87, of Augusta, died Saturday May 13, 2017 at the Togus Veterans Hospital. He was born in Augusta May 24, 1929 the son of Wallace and Edna (Ellis) Gilley. He attended Hewins and Williams School and received his GED while serving in the Marine Corps. He served from 1950 to 1958 in Parris Island, Camp Pendleton and Korea. After returning from the service, he was employed by the State of Maine, Highway Department, Merrill Transport Company, Hallowell Shoe, Kirschner, O’Connor GMC and the Kennebec Community Action Program. Chester was married to Ellen M. Stillings December 16, 1950. Chester was a life member of the VFW, Military Order of the Cooties, American Legion, the Marine Corps League and the Elks. He was Grand Commander, Military Order of the Cooties of Maine for a year and was Commander of VFW Post 887 in Augusta for two terms. He was a member of the Green Street United Methodist Church. Mr. Gilley was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Hester Gilley; sister, Ethel Chadwick and brothers, Kenneth and Wilfred Gilley. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Gilley; his daughters, Eileen Hibbert and her husband, Ronald, of Augusta, Cathleen Dunlap and her husband, Richard, of Augusta, Karen Gilley, of Naples, FL and June Gilley, of Clearwater, FL; a sister, Marie Athey, of Falls Church, VA; grandchildren, Heidi Dunlap, of Augusta, Jessica Boisvert, of Augusta, Benjamin Dunlap, of Canaan, Stephanie McGuire, of Augusta, Heather Hibbert, of Augusta, Shannon Kengott, of Augusta, ME, Tiffany Gilley, of Naples, FL, Erin Larrabee, of Clearwater, FL; seven great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Relatives and friends may visit at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church Street, Augusta, Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at Green Street United Methodist Church on Thursday May 18, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will be held June 6, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
