Obituary

Readfield - Donald M. Pelton passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday April 19th, 2017. He was born on July 18, 1927 in Augusta, Maine to his parents Raymond and Marjorie Pelton. He attended Cony High School until his junior year when he answered the call of duty and joined the Navy in 1945. Donald served his time in the South Pacific, after which he was honorably discharged in 1949. Upon returning home he met the girl of his dreams, Patricia Hayden, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. He worked for Statler Tissue Paper Company in Augusta until he retired after 40 years of exemplary performance. Donald was an avid outdoorsman with hunting, fishing and camping as his primary passions. He loved to tell tales of his fishing and hunting expeditions, always teasing those who would listen about the one that got away. He was a fantastic gardener, spending numerous hours beautifying his yard with flowers and vegetables, mowing his lawn and keeping it always looking impeccable. He tapped his maple trees each spring, making enough maple syrup to last until the next season. He was also a skilled carpenter. He spent many hours, not only working on his own house but all of his son’s, who greatly needed his assistance. Donald raised four of his own children and was beloved by grandchildren, raising his daughter Kim’s two boys, Christopher and Justin, as if they were his own and sharing his love and passion of the outdoors with them. Donald was predeceased by his wife, Pat, his daughter, Kimberly, and grandson, Ryan. He is survived by his children, David and his wife Colleen of Downingtown, PA; Rick and his wife Barbara of Freedom, NH and Edward and his wife Nancy of Lancaster, PA; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. There will be no visiting hours. A graveside ceremony for friends and family will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 20 in the East Readfield Cemetery, Rt. 17, Readfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maine Veterans’ Home, 310 Cony Road Augusta, ME 04330.
