Evelyn L. Quinn Dean Vaughn Obituary (1929

LIBERTY—Evelyn L. Vaughan, 88, of Liberty and formerly of Eagle Island, died March 3, 2017 in Belfast. Her niece, Wendy and sister, Arline were at her side. Evelyn was born in Camden January 17, 1929 the daughter of Captain Erland and Beulah (Allen) Quinn. Her childhood was spent on Eagle Island in Penobscot Bay where the Quinns had settled in 1815 and where the third and fourth generations of the Quinns established a summer inn. In this multi-generational, ancestral home, she along with her three siblings, were imbrued with lifestyles of fishing, farming, hospitality trades and the Lighthouse Keeper Service. A rich heritage, indeed. At the beginning of World War II, Erland moved his family to Camden for economic reasons and for continued education of the children. Evelyn had attended the one-room schoolhouse on Eagle Island through the eighth grade. She and her siblings enrolled in the Camden Schools and Erland was employed in the shipyard. After high school, Evelyn married Norman “Bud” Dean and raised four sons. Evelyn was a wonderful cook, taught herself photography, was an accomplished knitter, supplying perfect socks for her extended family at Christmas. Parkinson’s Disease and its’ complications made a huge impact on Evelyn’s active life. Evelyn and her husband, Bob Vaughan enjoyed seventeen years at a retirement community in Florida. They had a fulfilling social life, made many friends, and were active senior citizens in a warm sunny climate. Evelyn returned to her home in Maine in the fall of 2016 and was cared for there until recently needing more professional care at Tall Pines Nursing Home. Mrs. Vaughan was predeceased by her parents and a son, Erland Dean. She is survived by her husband, Robert Vaughan, of Belfast; her sons, Cary Dean and his wife, Thelma, of Liberty, Norman Dean, Jr. and his companion, Peggy McRae, of Lewiston, and Jeffrey Dean, of Belfast; her brother, Robert Quinn and his wife, Helene, of Eagle Island; sister, Arline Quinn, of Camden; grandchildren, Cappy Dean, Matthew Dean, Emily Hardy, and Tyler Dean; several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. A graveside service will be held later in the spring at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Camden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a fund for the Eagle Island Cemetery, C/O Robert Quinn, Sunset, Maine 04683. Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop.
