AUGUSTA ? Fred Russell 'Russ' McFarland, 80, formerly of Fuller Road in Augusta, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta from complications of Parkinson's disease. He had been a resident at the Veterans Home since November 1999. \r\r\n\r\r\nRuss was born in Chelsea, Mass., Sept. 7, 1921, the son of Fred R. McFarland Sr. and Florence Spencer McFarland. He graduated from Portland High School in 1939. During World War II, he worked in the Portland shipyards then served in the Army from December 1942 until March 1946. \r\r\n\r\r\nIn 1947 in Augusta, he and his father opened one of the first businesses on outer Western Avenue, McFarland Sales Company, selling and repairing cars. His dealership sold Volkswagens from the mid-1950s until 1970, then Datsuns/Nissans until his retirement and the sale of his business in 1988. \r\r\n\r\r\nRuss' greatest interest was his auto business, and he was happy spending long hours at his garage. He also liked to swim, snowmobile, go to stock car races and watch old movies. He had a tape collection of old-time comedians and radio shows. In later years, he enjoyed working in his garden, swimming in his pool and watching television. His family has many good memories of summer days spent together around his pool and of winter snowmobile trips. \r\r\n\r\r\nMr. McFarland is survived by his wife of 56 years, Catherina Bond McFarland; three children, Janice Glidden and her husband, Dale, of Winthrop, Gary McFarland and his fiancee, Teri Poulin, of Minot, and Carolyn Filauro and her husband, Anthony, of Millinocket; five grandchildren, Alison and Angela Filauro, Ryan, and Loriann and Shaina Glidden; his sister, Mildred Gendrolis and her husband, Alfred, of Falmouth; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. \r\r\n\r\r\nA memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta.
