Obituary

WAYNE ? Frederick B. Hurley Sr., 86, of Wayne, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta following a lengthy effort to recover from a stroke he suffered nearly two years ago. He was born in Belmar, N.J., Jan. 16, 1916, the son of Gertrude and John B. Hurley. Fred, affectionately referred to as 'Bud' by those who knew him well, attended Asbury Park High School and served in the South Pacific during World War II as a member of the 11th Airborne Division. He attained the grade of first sergeant and was discharged from the Army in 1945 following the occupation of Japan. He worked in the trucking industry from 1946 to 1980; he managed Jersey Coast Freight Lines for 17 years and Sterns Transport Company for the remainder of his career. He was very active in the Belmar, N.J., Fire Department and First Aid Squad and the Newark Traffic Club. He retired in 1980 and moved to Readfield, where he resided on Maranacook Lake. In 1996, he moved to Wayne, where he resided until the present. Fred came of age during the Great Depression. Growing up with very little, he believed that with hard work and dedication we can accomplish anything. His life was a testament to that belief. Never having finished high school but championing education on his own, devouring books on politics, history and business and ensuring that both his sons received a college education, he lived the American Dream, carving out a niche for himself so stark and so deep that it touched many, many lives. Although he was a shrewd businessman, he strongly believed in honesty, integrity and decency, and recognized that at the end of a day's work there was nothing more important than spending time with family and friends. His smile really could brighten up a room, and he had a remarkable wit and sense of humor that he never failed to exercise at the most opportune times. Fred was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be intensely missed by everyone who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Melva; his sons, Fred and his wife, Carol, of Wayne, and Richard and his wife, Nancy, of Stroudsburg, Pa.; a granddaughter, Shannon Morgan and her husband, Jason; a grandson, Ryan Hurley, and a granddaughter, Monica Hall. At the request of the family, there will not be a funeral; however, a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wayne Fire Department, Route 1 Box 515, Wayne 04284. Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home, Winthrop.
