Winthrop – Gwen Gatcomb, 90, died at home December 12, 2022 after a short illness.\nShe was born in East Machias July 14, 1932, daughter of John and Fannie Hoar.\n\nShe lived in the same home in Winthrop for the past 64 years. She graduated from Washington Academy in 1948. After moving to Winthrop, she worked at Carleton Woolen Mills for 32 years. She was active in unionizing Carleton and held officer positions in UPIU Local #1235 from 1972 to 1997 when she retired. She was active in many organizations (Maine Labor Group on Health, Maine Lung Assoc and Maine Commission for Women). She became the first female president of the Maine AFL-CIO in 1999.\n\nShe enjoyed square dancing, camping in the RV and gardening.\n\nShe is survived by her husband of 71 years, Bill, son, Bill Jr. (Susan Smarr), daughters, Brenda (Joe Lucas), Andrea, and “adopted daughter”, Bonnie Robichaud. Three grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 7 grand dogs. Also survived by her sister, Mary Jo. \n\nShe was predeceased by daughter, Tonda, and brother, Gordon.\n\nA celebration of life will be held Wednesday, Dec 21st from 3-6 pm at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St. Winthrop.\n\nIn lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, 55 Strawberry Ave, Lewiston ME 04240.\n\nThe family wishes to thank the staff at Beacon Hospice and her caregiver Penny Rosso Snider.
