WINTHROP - Hazel Reid Butler, 97, of Winthrop died on Saturday, March 5, 2005, at home. \r\r\n\r\r\nShe was born in New York City on May 7, 1907, the daughter of George H. and Araminta (Reid) Smith. \r\r\n\r\r\nShe graduated from Pleasantville High School and went on to college at Oberlin College in Ohio and then Columbia University in New York City. Hazel then went to work for The New York Times. On Feb. 2, 1929, Hazel married James Fenwick Butler Jr. at Trinity Church on the green in New Haven, Conn. The couple took up residence shortly after in Yarmouth. In the early 1930s, they moved to Augusta, where they lived for more than 50 years and raised their four children. \r\r\n\r\r\nHazel's husband, Jim, predeceased her in 1993. She also was predeceased by her brother, George H. Smith Jr. \r\r\n\r\r\nShe is survived by four children and their spouses, Kay Butler Gill and her husband, the Rev. James L. Gill, of Winthrop, Dr. James F. Butler III and his wife, Sally, of Vassalboro, Alyson Munro Butler and her husband, Robert Brundage, of Petaluma, Calif., and Bruce Reid Butler and his wife, Marcella, of Monmouth; 10 grandchildren, Laura Munro Gill-Henry, Christina Gill-Lindsey, James Gill Jr., Bill Butler, Kate Butler, Jessica Chapman, Ian Butler, Raven Butler, Nathan Butler and Myles Butler; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews and their families. \r\r\n\r\r\nThere will not be any visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Church, Summer Street, Augusta.
