Obituary

WINTHROP- James S. Cooper Sr., 83, of Beaver Dam Road, died Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, with his loving family by his side, after a brief illness. He was born in Augusta on June 9, 1930, the son of Eugene and Bernice (Young) Cooper. James graduated from Cony High School. He had worked for Central Maine Power Company for 34 years in the meter department until his retirement. James loved the outdoors and especially the Allagash. He could not contain his excitement when he was ‘heading north’ which was also on his vanity plate, a gift from his family. Jim enjoyed fishing and hunting but most evident was his wonder of the northern night sky, “It feels like I could reach up and just grab a star!” Jim was a dog lover, enjoying the company of his dogs, Taiko and Chewy. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marlene Cooper of Winthrop; his four children; James Cooper Jr. and his wife Vickie of South Carolina; Thomas Cooper and his wife Ethel of Orlando, FL.; Tamara Cooper of Manchester and Melanie Crockett and her husband Ned of Winthrop; nine grandchildren; Eric, Sean and B.J. Cooper, T.J. and Scott Cooper; Christopher and Corey Abbott; and Sarah and Stephen Crockett; a sister Nancy Shaw of New Hampshire; also several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. At the family’s request, all services will be private. Burial will be in Forest Grove Cemetery, Augusta. The family would like to thank all those involved in his care during his stay at MGMC. Also, Jim’s family deeply appreciates the support and kindness extended to them from all staff at MGMC and MaineGeneral Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MaineGeneral Hospice Volunteers of Kennebec Valley, 150 Dresden Avenue, Gardiner, ME 04345. Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where memories, condolences and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the website at www.khrfuneralhomes.com
