John L. Dunn Sr. Rev Obituary (1917

MOUNT VERNON - Rev. John L. Dunn Sr., 94, of Wings Mill Road, died Sunday, December 11, 2011 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta. He was born in Belgrade on April 9, 1917, the son of Rev. Leo and Blanche (Hanson) Dunn. Rev. Dunn graduated from Gardiner High School and the University of Maine, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree. He later attended Eastern Baptist Seminary. In his youth, his life’s dream was to own a dairy farm. For a short time he was a welder at Bath Iron Works during the war. After WWII, he purchased a working dairy farm with over one hundred head of cattle. For nine years he labored at that task until answering God’s call to the ministry. At that profession he was more successful and continued pasturing various churches in Maine for forty nine years. For over 20 years he has been the Pastor at the Dunn’s Corner Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. Together with his three sons, he has conducted Evangelistic services in a number of churches throughout Maine and other states. Like his father before him, John was a preacher of the Gospel. He was a trained vocalist and played the violin. He traveled with Dr. Sidney Powell, Evangelist as a song leader and soloist. He was a member of the American Baptist Churches of U.S.A and American Baptist Churches of Maine, where he served as President and on many boards and committees. He was married to Grace Dunn for 52 years and later to Alice Dunn for 20 years. He was predeceased by both of them as well as a daughter Sylvia Gouldsbough; two brothers Willard and Paul Dunn; and a grandson. He is survived by his three sons Rev. John L. Dunn Jr. of Litchfield; Rev. David L. Dunn of Gettysburg, PA. and Rev. Kenneth A. Dunn of Monroe WI.; a daughter Barbara Philbrick of Pelham NH; three step children Patty Bailey, Ronald Hodgdon and Donald Hodgdon; 21 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, 1 step great-grandson and several great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, December 14 from 6 to 8 pm at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St.,Augusta. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday at Penny Memorial United Baptist Church, 393 Water Street, Augusta. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Belgrade.
