LIVERMORE FALLS -- Maynard L. Babkirk, 79, of Farm Lane, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan. He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Dec. 7, 1931, the son of Herbert and Lillian (Mitchell) Babkirk. Maynard was a graduate of Portsmouth High School. He served with the Navy during the Korean Conflict aboard the battleship Missouri and later on the aircraft carrier The Hornet. After his military service, Maynard worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, serving a four-year apprenticeship as a machinist. He retired from the shipyard in 1979. In the early 1970s, he and his wife, Anne, owned and operated the Winthrop Motel. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a skilled woodworker, who could build just about anything. He was predeceased by a son, Dana Babkirk; and a brother, Herbert Babkirk. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Anne Babkirk of Livermore Falls; two sons, David Babkirk, and his wife, Theresa, of Eliot, and Stephen Bellucci and his wife, Joanne, of Barrington, Vt.; a daughter, Dianne Smith, and her husband, John, of Readfield; a sister, Joyce Martin, and her husband, Don, of Sabastian, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Jessica and her husband, Christian, David James, Lisa and her husband, Eric, Allesandra, Matteo, Bill and Meghan; five great-grandchildren: Lilly, Marina, Austin, Carter and Leah; a very close friend, Ken Mitchell, of Farmington; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. There will be no visiting hours. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. Burial with military honors will follow at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association , Maine Chapter, 383 US Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074.
