Robert I. McLeod Sr., 80, of New Bedford, died Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Vibra Hospital in New Bedford. He was born in Spruce Head, Maine on December 17, 1935, the son of Irving and Florence (Batty) McLeod. At the age of 10, Robert had his own lobster boat called the” Bobbin”, and fished the waters off Spruce Head with his father. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, and had worked as an auto mechanic at his own garage in Portland. He later did maintenance for a Condo Development in Nashua, NH for many years and most recently retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Jamaica Plains, MA. He was a member of the Clan McLeod. He was predeceased by a sister Jenny McLeod of Spruce Head. He is survived by his children, Robert I. McLeod Jr. and his wife Cindy of Auburn; Roberta I. Smith of Portland, Melanie L. Newbury and her husband Dexter of Augusta, and Carrie M. O’Neil and her husband Shane of Portland; his significant other Irene Belanger of New Bedford, MA; two brothers, Floyd McLeod of Venice, FL., and Daniel McLeod of Spruce Head; a sister Beth Prevost of Auburn; as well as 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Graveside services will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, August 5, at Forest Grove Cemetery in Augusta.
