AUGUSTA - Sylvia Viles Lund, 75, passed away peacefully on Sept. 18, 2007, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Gray Birch, following a period of failing health. Born in New York City and raised in Augusta, she was the daughter of William Payson Viles and Marian Nichols Viles. She attended Cony High School in Augusta and graduated from Westover School in Middlebury, Conn., and Wellesley College, where she majored in political science. In 1988, she earned a master's degree in public administration from the University of Maine. Sylvia married Augusta attorney Jon A. Lund in 1952 and they had six children. They were divorced in 1974. Sylvia Lund gained political and community stature through her service as a member of the Maine House of Representatives and, more recently, as an at-large member of the Augusta City Council. She also served on the Augusta School Board, the State Board of Education, as the director of the state's Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention, and as a volunteer for countless worthy causes. She valued her faith and was an active and involved member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Augusta, for many years. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her older brother, John Viles; and her younger sister, Marion Viles, both of Florida. She is survived by her children, William and his wife, Sara Holmbom, Michael and his wife, Stefani, Rolf and his wife, Linda, Peter, Alfred and his wife, Ruth, and Carol. She also is survived by her stepmother, Elsie P. Viles; her companion, Robert Kinsey Sr.; and by her grandchildren, Nick, Alex, Debra, Jason, Ann Price, Tim Price, Clara and Sofia. The family wishes to thank the skilled, dedicated and compassionate staffs of Maine Medical Center in Portland and the Gray Birch health facility in Augusta for their care of Sylvia. There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 9 Summer St. in Augusta. In lieu of flowers, Sylvia asked that friends support the City of Augusta's William Payson Viles Tree Area, at Mill Park. A fund for that purpose has been established at the city manager's office, Augusta City Hall, 16 Cony St., Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1 Church St., Augusta, 04330.
