Obituary

EAST WINTHROP -- Zane Peters passed away on April 26, 2012, following a battle with heart disease. Zane was born in Augusta on Dec. 14, 1930, the son of G. Henry Peters and Aurelia Luce Peters, and grew up in Hallowell. He graduated from Hallowell High School in 1950 and later from Hanson's Barber School. His barbering and hairstyling career spanned over 50 years, the first 20 years at Mickey McDonald's Barber Shop in the Worster House in Hallowell, and then as the proprietor of Zane's of Maine in Augusta and Farmingdale. In the 1970's he traveled the country putting on instructional seminars for the Redken hair products company. He served in the Army Reserve, retiring with the rank of captain. Zane was also past president of the Augusta Rotary Club. Zane was a talented home handyman, having built the interior of his two barber shops and home on Cobbossee Lake. He will be remembered for always having a joke to pass along. He was predeceased by a brother, George H. Peters Jr. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie Kellogg Peters, of East Winthrop; his daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Jim Fairfield, of West Gardiner; daughters Kathi Peters and Brenda Simonton of Augusta and Barbara Peters of Windham; his son, Mike Peters, and his partner, Cindy Gilbert, of Manchester; four grandchildren, Jon Fairfield of Myers Flat, Calif., Jeff Fairfield of West Gardiner, and Devin and Emily Simonton of Augusta; his stepsister, Joyce Peters Fessenden, of Winthrop; and his brother-in-law, Peter Kellogg, and his wife, Gloria, of Freeport; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta, where visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of service.
